Location
This photo was actually taken in an office setting. The doors were painted a semi-matte grey color and i thought it would make a great backdrop. I only had one light with me so I had to get creative.Time
It was indoors so the time of day obviously wasn't a factor but it was in he afternoon.Lighting
So the objective with this photo was to take my single Godox AD360 and make it look like I was using more than one light. To make the lighting for this picture i had someone hold my godox bare bulb flash with the collapsible beauty dish attachment on it (basically a 1.5 foot by 1.5 foot mini round softbox really). So I first took a test shot on the door and caculated where the REFLECTION of my light would appear on the door. I placed the puppy in such a manner to have that reflection appear on the dark side of his face behind him. That is what creates the separation from the background and prevents the puppy's shadow side from fating away into the blackness. The flash was held only a couple feet away for a dramatic fall off and a very soft light.Equipment
I used a Fujifilm X-T1 with the 56mm f1.4 lens. I had it stopped down to about f8 if I recall correctly for sharpness. As mentioned above I used the Godox AD360 bare bulb flash with the Godox foldable "beauty dish".Inspiration
What inspired me? I think the answer is pretty easy.... That little guy is was just one of the cutest puppies I'd seen in a while. He is the brother of my dog and they both had distinctly different personalities. My dog was very mischievous while his brother here just had literally an "aura" of cuteness. I had to capture it.Editing
I did process the raw file through Lightroom but not much was done to it except ensure the contrast was to my liking. In my camera bag
I am an avid Fuji fan. I have owned every release since the x-E1 as my first mirrorless. I own nearly every Fuji prime lens and I typically take a small bag with 1 or two speedlights and a couple lenses depending on where I am going and what I am doing. Obviously shooting a wedding or important portraits and so forth I bring out the big guns and have all of my strobes and so forth. But my most used lens in their lineup is definitely the 56mm 1.4. Love that lens!Feedback
If you have one light and want to splash light on the background in a little spot as if you had a background light focused try looking for the actual REFLECTION of your softbox. Semi reflective surfaces work best. Finished wood for instance can give the necessary result. Find this spot and place your subject accordingly. In photography terms, this spot of reflection is called a "Specular Highlight". It comes from a Latin word that means "mirror" or reflection. Learning all about specular highlights on backgrounds or your subject itself can bring your photography to a whole new level. Experiment and have fun with it!
