Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the waterfront docks at Steveston, BC.

Time

This is probably one of my favourite waterfront pictures that I have taken to date. I took it early in the morning, just as the sun was rising and breaking through the heavy fog. It was cold and damp on this particular November day.

Lighting

The lighting was extremely subdued on account of the heavy fog and the sun just rising. To ensure that the people stayed in focus for the duration of the exposure, I decreased the exposure time to 1/250 sec.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D700 camera with a 14-28mm Nikkor wide angle lens and a Manfrotto tripod to steady the camera and to help frame the composition.

Inspiration

I come to this particular location quite often as it offers everything that I look for in a waterfront photo shoot - water, people, boats, birds, restaurants, and scenery, along with an overall laid back and casual atmosphere to take pictures. The heavy fog helped to mute the background and the colours, allowing the fishermen to stand out as the central area of focus in the picture.

Editing

I post processed the picture with Colour Efex Pro 4 software to boost the colours and to improve the overall contrast of the picture.

In my camera bag

On a planned photo shoot, I normally bring all of my photography equipment. This includes Nikon D700 and D810 camera bodies, Nikkor 14-28mm, 70-200 mm, and 35-80mm lenses, a Nikon 1.7X extender, and a Manfrotto tripod.

Feedback

When trying to capture award winning photographs, try using a tripod to hold your camera. This should allow you to better frame the picture that you want to take and to eliminate unwanted blur from your pictures.
