Behind The Lens

Location

Having just completed the back side of the Torres del Paine circuit in southern Chile, I decided to avoid the increasing crowds and instead of completing the loop, go to another exit from the park The photo was taken from the banks of lake Pehoé looking East with the most famous peaks to the left.

Time

After the 12-hour trek the previous day I didn't feel like getting up early. I walked slowly, taking photos of every bird, rock and shrub as an excuse to rest. This photo was taken at 1:35pm on December 27, 2014.

Lighting

This is the beginning of summer in the southern hemisphere and early afternoon so, according to the books, the worst possible lighting for landscape.

Equipment

Canon 7D Mk II with Sigma 8-16mm. I had a tripod with me but this was taken handheld.

Inspiration

The contrast of the perfectly black-and-white dry bush with the intense color of the lake and the spring greenery made me do it.

Editing

I generally dislike over-processed landscapes. I tried some adjustments but everything seemed to only make things worse. This is only cropped to 16:9 and the whites maxed out.

In my camera bag

I've had the Canon 7D with Sigma 8-16 all the time for a few years. I take either a Canon 100-400 or, as on this trip, Tamron 150-600.

Feedback

Torres del Paine is one of the most photographed places on the planet. So what?
