I absolutely love this type of photograph. The converging lines and the contrast between the highway and the brightness of the mountain backdrop and sky are simply perfect. Well done.

I just noticed this was in Alberta, one of my favorite places in the world.Where exactly is the Icefields Parkway?

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on my first drive along the Icefields Parkway in Alberta last winter. We were driving south from Jasper to Banff and this was taken right before the stop for Athabasca Glacier. I have since driven the Parkway north, but you miss this view if you do the drive that way.

Time

This shot was taken a little after noon in March when winter was giving way to spring. This was a great time to shoot because the sun was behind me and made it possible to shoot those mountains. I also think that winter is an amazing time to see the Rockies because nothing beats the snow covered mountains. I have been here in spring and autumn but there is something magical about the snowy peaks and the lack of traffic along the way!

Lighting

I was lucky enough to have perfect lighting when snapping this shot. Because it was so bright, I was able to use ISO 100 to give the shot the least noise possible.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon T5i with a Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 lens. No other equipment was used to take this shot.

Inspiration

The drive along the Icefields Parkway is incredible and every time you see something new, you think it's the most beautiful sight you have ever seen. But this mountain was something special. It literally took my breath away. I really wanted to capture the spirit of those mighty Rocky Mountains. I also wanted people who would see this shot to feel like they were experiencing this view first hand. I know that each time I see it, it brings me back to that place and makes me feel so little compared to those massive mountains.

Editing

I don't like to do any post-processing if possible, but with this shot I did do a bit of sharpening and I slightly adjusted the exposure to give the sky a soft blue tone.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Canon T5i along with my 18-55mm kit lens and my Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens. I also carry a grey card with me in case I need some help getting the correct exposure to show the accurate colours of the landscapes I shoot.

Feedback

Timing is everything. I waited and waited for a moment that no cars were coming in either direction before I ran into the middle of the road to take the photo. I had to go back a few times before I got a shot that I was really happy with. I also happened upon this spot when the lighting was perfect. I have been back since and the lighting has never been as perfect as that day, but as long as it is behind you, you should be able to take a nice enough shot! So advice... try to time being here with when the sunshine will be behind you and look both ways before you cross the street! :)
