Behind The Lens

Location

Both pieces of this photo were taken in my backyard. I didn't have a studio at the time, so I had to work with what I did have.

Time

I remember taking a few shots of myself in my backyard one afternoon, then going back out to snap some quick pictures of the lightbulb later that night.

Lighting

To tell you the truth I didn't think much about lighting when taking these photos, the porch light in the top right corner just happens to be a nice touch.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D3200 with an 18-55mm lens. I had to use a tripod and a timer/remote to take the pictures of myself stretched out on a stool.

Inspiration

This is definitely one of my most asked about photos, and I honestly wish I had a more interesting story behind it. I had the idea for me floating, but I had no clue what else I wanted to do with the picture. After taking the shots of myself in the backyard, I rooted around in my garage for inspiration and came across a box of old lightbulbs. The rest is history.

Editing

I absolutely love post processing. With this picture, I used quick selection and a layer mask to get myself off the stool and into the lightbulb. After that, I honestly just went to town playing with all different kinds of effects in photoshop until I was happy with my image.

In my camera bag

Fun fact: I hate carrying a camera bag. I always, always have my camera around my neck though, and if I know I'm going need extra equipment, I pack in in my backpack or car.

Feedback

Honestly just have fun with it. There are so many ways you could take a similar idea and do something totally different with it. I'm by no means a professional, so all I really recommend you need is a camera with a timer, something to sit on, and( if you choose) a lightbulb :')
