Taken on a summer vacation in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

This is one of the first times I shot in RAW with my Canon Rebel XT. While browsing for images to share I took the opportunity to use my latest Corel PaintShop Pro X6 to create the single HDR image from Raw.

I still like the effect because for the short duration of the shot I caught the perfect wave splashing against the pier.

Behind The Lens

Location

Having walked the legendary Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey, we ventured down to the beach area to work our way back north to our hotel. I couldn't help but be intrigued by the waves crashing onto the old pier, so spent some time to capture this shot.

Time

While vacationing and taking photos one doesn't always have the luxury of heading back to a location to get that absolute right time. Fortunately for me, I happened to be in the right place at just the right time for this shot. Taken August 10, 2008 at 10:04 am EDT.

Lighting

The mid-morning sun was sufficiently high to create a nice back lighting, but thankfully the new pier kept the direct light off the lens.

Equipment

Taken handheld with Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT with the 28-80mm Kit lens at 33mm. Geeky info f/29 at 1/13 second, ISO-100 on full manual exposure.

Inspiration

I really wanted to capture the splashing of the waves against the old pier pilings whose bright green seaweed was such a contrast to the posts..

Editing

The photo straight from the camera was a bit washed out, but at the time I had been reading about High Dynamic Range (HDR) processing so with a trial version of a program I took the RAW image and had a go at seeing what could be done. As there was a watermark I quickly learned my main photo editing software had that capability. So I created 5 exposures and used my Corel Paint Shop Pro X5 to merge them and create "Kerspalsh".

In my camera bag

My camera gear has changed a bit since this capture. While I still find the Canon Rebel XT a good camera, I now carry a Sony A65 with my prime workhorse lens a Sony 18-250mm, which is great for travelling with its broad range. I also carry my Tamron 10-24mm ultra-wide angle zoom and if weight is not a concern I include, from my Minolta film camera days, the 200-400mm zoom. Recently added a Vanguard VEO AM264 mono-pod with a Vanguard ball head. Besides an LED on-camera light, I also like to carry a high intensity flashlight for some experimentation with light painting.

Feedback

For me, there is always opportunities when travelling to see new things and find those unique shots to add to one's collection. I feel that one has to keep an open mind and be prepared to experiment a bit, but also not lose sight of what you love to photograph.
