Behind The Lens

Location

Whitby Abbey, Whitby, UK.

Time

Taken around 3pm, and just before the cloud descended and turned the day grey and miserable!

Lighting

The sun was off to the right, and gave the scene a soft brightness that I think nicely picked out the varying colours of the limestone ruins.

Equipment

Handheld, Canon D1200 with kit 18-55mm lens, and a polarising filter.

Inspiration

A less often photographed angle of the abbey, I particularly like to show objects from an overlooked perspective. Everybody who visits the abbey sees this as they enter the site, but the grand southern end, just visible to the right, is the photo everyone wants to capture. This particular angle shows just how much more of the abbey exists, and to what extent it has been destroyed.

Editing

No post processing whatsoever, I like to be honest about what I present to the viewer, warts and all!

In my camera bag

Canon D1200, kit 18-55mm lens, 50mm Canon prime lens, Canon 75-300mm telephoto lens, a selection of ND filters, and each lens has its own polarising filter. A budget set up, for now :)

Feedback

Look for the overlooked! It's very satisfying getting the shot everyone else gets, especially when it's done well, but it's fun to make people have to stop and think for a second when presented with the familiar in an unfamiliar way. Get Down on the floor, or get above your subject if the normal shot is from ground level. A dramatic cloudscape is always a good addition to any outdoor shots, and it's worth waiting around for something unusual. Speak g of which, this shot required the multiple tourists to all walk behind a pillar or otherwise disappear from shot long enough to make it look lonely and isolated. Seconds later, and there would have been around 10 other tourists visible in shot!
