Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in September 15 at the Scottish air show in Ayr, Scotland where I live.

Time

The photo was taken late afternoon. The Red Arrows display was one of the final displays of the day and one I was most looking forward to. In fact I was heading to Italy the following day to get married and had it not been the Red Arrows I would probably have already headed home!

Lighting

It was a bright sunny day as I recall, great for the spectators, but pretty difficult for the photographers! I had moved away from the main location of the air show further down the coast where there was more cover from the direct sun.

Equipment

The shot was taken with my Sony Alpha 77, I was using the Tamron 18-270 travel lens. Great all round lens in my view with reasonable sharpness at both extremes. The lens was great for events like this as you can use the telephoto capabilities for the aircraft and then wide angled for street stuff!

Inspiration

The Red Arrows always put on a breathtaking display, so I was determined to try and get some good captures. I wanted to try and capture something dramatics that captured the movement and precision of their amazing team.

Editing

I only post process in Lightroom. When playing around with this one I found that I preferred the shot in mono, it added to the drama of the scene. I cropped in the shot, adjusted the lighting, increased the clarity and reduced the colour saturation.

In my camera bag

I have since moved over to the fantastic Nikon D810, but refuse to get rid of my trusty Sony Alpha. When using the Sony I carry the kit lens, along with a 55mm prime.

Feedback

When it comes to photographing aircraft their are lots of factors to getting a good shot, luck being one of them, so take many shots! Make sure you get a decent location, don't be afraid to raise the iso to 400 or more to get a quick shutter speed for sharpness. Try to anticipate where the aircraft is going, and photograph in bursts. Finally relax and enjoy yourself!
