Stark image of life in the most inhospitable of places. Great use of b&w to emphasise the texture. Brilliant shot!!

Stunning B&W photo. I see the color version a little below it; It's an excellent photo either way, but I think the B&W is much more striking. It creates a powerful feeling for the play of light and shadow. Congratulations on your challenge win!

Location
This picture was made looking up one of the gypsum dunes at Whate Sands National Monument, in New Mexico, just outside Alamogordo.Time
Approximately 5:30pmLighting
It was still fairly bright, but the gypsum ripples rising to the green Yuccas, with the blue sky & white clouds drew me to it. I have posted this in the original color version, but really think changing it to black & white really brings out more detail.Equipment
Canon EOS 6D, EF24-105mm f/4 IS USM lens. This was handheld, at 24mm, f9.0, 1/800sec, ISO100.Inspiration
The ripples provided great leading lines to the Yuccas and the sky.Editing
Just a little sharpening in Lightroom CC & then in Photoshop CC, I decided to change it into the black & white. In my camera bag
All of the above, along with a 75mm-300mm zoom lens, macro lens, 17mm-40mm wide angle lens, 2x extender, cable release, as well as some filters, which I seldom use & equipment to keep the lenses clean. Also, on the outside of the bag is my tripod.Feedback
My husband, who is a great supported of mine, often drives me to take pictures. This particular trip was two weeks long. I sometimes feel rushed. And that is my problem. So, frequently I shoot handheld. My advice is to take your time and use your tripod. Make sure you look around, including behind you to assure you haven't missed a photo opt. So my biggest suggestion is to slow down & look around. Also, if you can check out an area during the day, when the light is not good, you'll get a better idea as to where you want to shoot. I had previously been to White Sands, so I had a good idea of what time of day and area that I wanted to shoot.
