As the sun was going down, these two were enjoying their reception when I looked outside and saw this perfect sky over the country club. I felt as if I were Arnold telling them to "Come with me if you want to live...." but instead, it was "Come with me if you want the shot of your lives". Thankfully, they listened and we were blessed with the perfect sunset.

Behind The Lens

Location

This magical photo was taken on the 18th green of a golf course just north of Toronto, Ontario. As the sun was setting over the course after an intensely rainy wedding, the sky started to burn up in the most unbelievable colors! At the time, it was right in between the speech of the bride's parents and best man. Right over their should we was a huge window and an opportunity to capture a wedding photo they would charish forever.

Time

Believe it or not, right at sun set ;)

Lighting

I wanted to bring the illusion that the sun was setting into the bride's vail so we decided to put a flash unit behind the mound of the green and fire it right back into them. I loved the silhouette feel, but still wanted to retain some details of these two, so we had a flash on the camera pointing at them for just a touch of fill.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5Ds, and I THINK with the 24-70mm 2.8. And two canon 600EX-RT flashes (One on a tripod)

Inspiration

Once you saw the sky setting over the beautiful couple in the hall, there was no question that you had to take this shot. I honestly felt like the Terminator "Take my hand if you want to live"... but in stead "Come with me if you want the best shot of your life" Thanks goodness they trusted me ;) When the universe provides you a sky like that, you don't hesitate to answer with some great photography.

Editing

VERY minimal - It's strange, these photos were almost perfect right out of the camera (I've never had this before) It actually took me more itme in lightroom realizing that anything I did to the photo actually made it WORSE! The only small adjustments I did was make the mound before the couple a little darker as the flash highlighted some green grass, and I took up the shadows on the couple ever so slightly (I may have touch contrast JUST a bit too)

In my camera bag

(For Weddings) Canon 5D Mark III Canon 5Ds 4 X 600EX-RT Canon 24-70 2.8 Canon 70-200 2.8 Canon 85mm Canon 100mm Black Rapid Duel Strap

Feedback

When that sun rolls in like that, simply expose to the sky and drop in a couple lights to highlight and backlight the couple / subject. Playing with the distance of the lights to the subjects is key. Let your subjects be natural and THEM (I love the natural movements rather than forced poses)
