Location
This photo was taken in the mountains of North Carolina at a motocross race, that my stepdaughter was participating in.Time
It was a hot, early autumn afternoon, and boy was it dusty. The constant day after day drought situation, through-out the summer, made it even more difficult for the classes of racers, that had signed up to participate in the races. The races would extend into the late afternoon hours, and everyone, and their motorbikes, would be covered in red dust, before the races were completed.Lighting
I knew dust was going to be a factor that day, but was using the dust to my advantage, which gave me the idea, of naming my picture, Riding Through the Dust. If you look carefully, you can see people on both sides of the top of the hill, that the rider was climbing, but if you don't you just see a rider, climbing a hill, as if he was all alone. It's all about prospective. I didn't use any special type of lighting on this picture, except for the natural light already present.Equipment
This shot was taken using my first Nikon D50, with no other special equipment, except a lens filter, for sun, and dust. It was so dusty, that I constantly had to change out filters, and had to take the camera apart at the end of the day, to make sure it would be ready for the next race.Inspiration
On this particular day, I was out taking pictures of my step daughter, who was participating in a motocross race, and being a photographer, and loving the racing, I thought why not capture shots of many other racers, so their families would also have memories to keep of that day. This picture was inspired by my step daughter, who has always been so strong, and when she wants something, she goes for it. Also, on the this day, my stepdaughter, who was wearing a knee brace, from being hurt in a previous race, was racing despite the fact, that she would have surgery 2 days after this race was completed. By the way, she won her race, so it was extra special to capture this moment for her.Editing
There was very little post processing required, after I took this picture. I uploaded the picture from my camera's SD card, and transferred it to my laptop, and that was about it, other than cropping the picture. In my camera bag
Normally, in my camera bag, I carry my trusty D-50 camera, which, has a 18-300 Sigma lens, an Tamron 18-200 lens, lens cleaner, and camera lens cloth, a lens brush, extra SD cards, camera filters, 2 extra batteries, and a battery charger.Feedback
For anyone wanting to capture pictures, similar to this one, my main advice, would be to make sure you have the right filters for you camera, whether it's for sun, or dust, and keeping your equipment clean. Keeping your equipment clean, is so important, for the internal, and external parts of your camera, and had I not taken the time to clean, and replace the lens filters on my camera, between races, I could have had some serious damage to my camera. So my number one advice, is maintain your equipment, before you use it, and right after, to keep it in the best working condition.
