I took this photo in Northern New Jersey at my childhood home.Time
This photo was taken in the afternoon. It was very cold out and I remembered being bundled up in several layers. My mother and brother were standing to the side of me also bundled up. We had been outside for about 30 minutes before this photo was taking. It was so cold that the snow was more like ice.Lighting
The afternoon lighting created a very interesting look. Because of the trees in the back, the snow became a very blue color, which I really liked. The shadows helped finish of the edges of the photo, instead of looking blown out from the sun hitting the white snow. This allowed me to expose the photo for my dog and the rest just seemed to follow.Equipment
I used my Nikon D800, with a Nikkor 35-135 mm lens.Inspiration
I was inspired to take this photo because we always played with my dog, Smudgie, in the snow and he always made these hilarious faces. My mom was throwing peanuts to him and he kept missing, digging his face into the snow to get the fallen peanuts. When she throw one, I was able to get this picture of him trying to catch it. It's funny because, in this photo, he looks pretty mean, but he is such a loving and sweet pup.Editing
I didn't do any post-processing on this photo. This photo was taken a few years ago and I hadn't purchased Lightroom by then, so I didn't spend much time retouching. In my camera bag
I normally have my Nikon D800, Nikkor 35 mm portrait lens, Nikkor 35-135 mm telephoto lens, Nikkor 18-55 mm zoom lens, an extra battery, and various other DIY tools I could potentially need (a rubber jar opener works wonders as a focus puller for video.)Feedback
Have a cooperative dog and have lots of patience (and peanuts.) The reason I was able to get this photo is because Smudgie is such a smart and tolerant (and peanut-loving) dog. Have another person to throw the peanuts. If you have a dog that loves snow, you will get better pictures as the snow starts to collect on their face. And have fun. If you stress too much about getting "that" photo, you wont. I didn't go out trying to get this photo, it just kind of happened and I timed it right. Timing is a big part of my photography, as most of what I do is dance photography. I have to be ready to capture anything. A technical tip: make sure your shutter speed is well above 1/250!
