Location
This image was shot outdoors about 5 feet from a tree line.Time
I wanted dark and moody light so we shot around 7pm in the evening.Lighting
The lighting in this image is a critical part of the story. I wanted a naturally dramatic look, but the trees blocked most of the directional light that was available. To compensate, I used a Speedlite in an octobox to enhance the scene.Equipment
I used my Canon 5D Mark II on a tripod to capture the multiple frames needed. Lens was my all time favorite, the 50mm, which is on my camera 90% of the time. The Speedlite was a Canon 580 ex II.Inspiration
This image is extremely personal to me. My mother developed Alzheimer's Disease early, and it has progressed rapidly. Photography, for me, is my form of therapy. I needed a way to express my sadness over what was happening with my mom, but something to remind me that she is heading to a better place.Editing
Post processing was done in Photoshop to combine the two frames. I lowered the opacity of the "soul" image to around 40%. After that, I desaturated, added texture and increased contrast in the light. In my camera bag
My two cameras, Canon 5D Mark II and 5D Mark IV. Lenses I use are 50mm, 85mm, 70-200 f/2.8L is II and the 25-104. I also pack pocket wizards, a Photoflex Octodome and a Westcott Rapidbox.Feedback
Know in advance exactly what you want your final image to look like. Try to use a tripod if possible it makes layering the images easier in post.
