Behind The Lens

Location

Zaanse Schans 20 minutes from Amsterdam. This picture I took twice at two different times with two different cameras. First time in 1989 in September with my Pentax SF1 35 mm camera. People raved about it then. In May 2012 I went back with my new Nikon D5100. Found the same spot and got this shot which turned out really well. No photoshop or Lightroom used.

Time

If I remember correctly this was shot late morning. The weather was good, the crowds were down which worked in my favor as this is a huge tourist destination. Everybody needs to see the windmills, as a result, they miss the good spots.

Lighting

Natural light worked well in this case. Flash would have overexposed the picture. The result I have entered competitions, it has been published in a photography book, it has had in excess of 100,000 views online.

Equipment

At the time my film camera had just died. So I bought a Nikon D5100 to replace my Pentax. I went to the photography show and Pentax ignored me, so I got rid of everything Pentax and changed to Nikon. Bought an SB 700 flash. Used a tripod. Since I had shot it before I knew what I was looking for and got great results. Natural light was great, so no flash required.

Inspiration

Been there before and wanted to compare between film and digital as it took me a long time to want to trust digital. That is why I started with a D5100 and now have upgraded to a D810

Editing

My philosophy is this, anybody can pick up a camera, they point they shoot, go to Photoshop or Lightroom and fix up their picture to make it look better. To me, the only thing I use those programs for is cropping pictures. Cameras are computers, you have a ton of settings and if you learn to use them you can take beautiful shots. Everybody talks about developing the picture, my interest lies in taking good pictures. With film, I focused on taking pictures, let the specialists who enjoy developing do that. I have been told that I have a natural eye for photography. The accolades are starting to come in. I just enjoy doing it.

In my camera bag

D810 Nikon, D5100, 14mm - 24mm lens, 50mm lens, 18mm 55mm lens, SB700 flash, tripod, extra batteries, lens cleaning brushes and cloth.Battery chargers and extra batteries.

Feedback

When going to a spot that a lot of tourists would go to, try to locate a spot where not many would think of going. I was close to the exit, but in general, people would have no reason to go where I did. Pay attention to crowds so that when it is not so busy you can get your shot. Pay attention to the weather, a number of clouds will work to your advantage. Relax, take your time and enjoy the process.
