The photograph was taken from my front yard overlooking the town of Grabouw, just beyond the mountains is Cape Town.Time
Was shot in the evening around 21H00.Lighting
Lightning is dangerous and unpredictable. especially here, where there are a lot of trees and electrical poles etc, one should just take note of your surroundings and be safe.Equipment
Canon 5D Mk2 with a Canon 24-105L lens. Aperture was set to f/11. Used tripod as I was shooting every 30 seconds because the lighting timing was unpredictable. ISO was set at 400 in order to get the dark foreground within the 30 second exposure.Inspiration
I shoot anything outdoors, but we do not have many lighting storms here in the Cape, so when one comes, I make sure I can capture it.Editing

Canon 1DMk4, 1DMk2, 5DMk2 and an old canon 30D. Lenses change all the time, I currently have a Canon 17-40L, 24-105L and a 70-200L and of course a tripod and a remote, the best equipment is unaffordable here in South Africa, so I buy and sell just to get the gear I am looking for. Other than that I only pack what I need for the day and try to keep the bag as light as possible, for the reason that I walk great distances to get pics around hereFeedback
Lightning is unpredictable, so try set your exposure as long as possible for the foreground. If the there is a strike it will be recorded along with your background. I found for what I was using in this shot f/11 was best and used the longest exposure I could get on the foreground and that was 30 seconds. With the exposure set for as long as possible, you might end up having multiple strikes in one pic which could really look great, obviously depends on the frequency strikes. Remember, being out in the open puts you and your equipment at risk so take every precaution you can to be safe during a lightning storm. In this shot, the storm was quite far back, but as it came closer I decided to pack up and be safe.
