Absolute masterpiece. This is one of the best pictures I've seen. Incredible detail and the contrast is perfect. Total winner in my opinion!

Awesome photo! Great shot in Black/White. The expression you captured on the Train Engineer's face says a lot, great lighting and detail.

Location
I took this photo on-board the footplate of a steam train based at the great central railway, Nottingham, UK. An open air museum that keeps steam alive.Time
The photograph was taken around 2pm during a dull overcast day.Lighting
The lighting was quite difficult, although the footplate is open to the elements, the sun wasn't shining. However the natural glow from the fire certainly helped!Equipment
I used a Nikon D800 & Nikon 16-35mm. No tripod or flashInspiration
I have always loved the nostalgia of steam. They're living breathing machines so to have the chance of riding on the footplate was fantastic. I wanted to capture the movement & the people keeping these trains running . Derek, the driver, has spent his whole life doing so.Editing
The only post processing I did was to convert to black & white using Lightroom. In my camera bag
The equipment I normally carry is a Nikon D800/D7000, a 10-20mm, 150-500mm & 50mm. My current tripod weighs a ton so I rarely take it out. Sometimes I have my SB-900 flash.Feedback
If it's something you love or have a genuine interest in then all you have to do is ask. They may just let you get that little bit closer than normal. Enjoy the moment but also watch & learn, find a routine so you know where & when to take the photograph that will best tell the story. If you notice in this photo your eyes are lead from pressure bar, along his arm & to his eyes & out of the image. Making you look at everything in shot. You naturally look at an image from left to right, making this image easy on the eye & tells a story.
