Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on our farm from the top of a hill.

Time

It was right about 7 PM and we'd just had a small tornado hit close to our farm and I remember looking out after it was all over to the most beautiful rainbow and light streaming across the yard. I picked up my camera and headed outside, mostly relieved that I could step outside and not feel like the house was going to blow away. The stillness was a bit eerie but it was a nice change. I had no real plan of what I might find to take a picture of but I just knew by the type of light I'd seen that I'd find something! I went around the corner of the house and found the most beautiful clouds rolling in!

Lighting

I think it's important to keep the right balance of light vs. dark in a picture. If the light was coming in then you'd want a greater amount of light in the picture - as well as if the dark is approaching, you'd want to show more of the dark.

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon SX40 with the built in 35x zoom lens - 4.3-150.5 mm - f/2.7-5.8. No other equipment used.

Inspiration

Clouds are always something that have been really intriguing to me. I just knew something was needed as foreground and the clouds would be a backround, the sheep made the perfect but object, I love animals and the challenge they always bring with photography.

Editing

I brightened the whole picture and turned up the saturation just a bit to show more the actual colors. Other than that it is completely natural.

In my camera bag

Seeing as my camera doesn't use a whole lot of different lenses I have to make do with the one that is built in. One of my the first things I always try to make sure I have is batteries and fully-charged ones nonetheless, I keep 2 extras so that I never run out. I also keep a couple extra cards, as well as lens cleaner and cloth. I wouldn't win 'the heaviest bag' award. ;)

Feedback

I'm sure its common advice but patience is definitely a key thing, as well as timing. You can wait a long time for maybe only 2 perfectly lighted pictures as the surroundings are always changing. Evening light is always an inviting time for me to go out with my camera.
