Early Morning in Late September.About 9 AM as the sun was beginning to light up the featuresLighting
Arrived just as the sunlight was beginning to break over the taller mountains to the East. Loved the way it began to highlight the features of the rock face at the opposite end of the lake.Equipment
Canon 7D with 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens at 32mm, 1/15 sec at F14, ISO 100, Gitzo 3541 tripodInspiration
To capture the beauty of the morning. I loved the features of the natural rock face combined with the gentle sweeping shoreline. That couples with the fact that this was where the van stopped loaded with a bunch of middle aged photography enthusiasts.......sometimes you just trust those that did the scouting ahead of time....Editing
Post-processing was done in Lightroom 5 with only a few basic adjustments. Pushed the exposure about a third of a stop, reduced highlights and contrast a bit. Shadows brought out and just a bit of noise reduction. In my camera bag
Canon 7D and Canon 5D Mk II camera bodies. Various ND filters from 1 stop to 10 stop. Various smalls including cleaners, memory cards, gaffers tape, flashlight and my interavalometer. A couple of microfibre cloths can be a lifesaver... Lenses may include Canon 100-400 L, 100mm f2.8 macro, 10-18mm EFS and 70-300mm, or a Rokinon 24mm F1.8 depending on the situation or intended subject.Feedback
Get up EARLY to capture the best light and to be set up prior to sunrise. This was the second stop of the morning. Get the best tripod you can afford and don't forget that foreground object in your composition. Think about taking bracketed shots in high contrast situations. You can always delete two of them when you get home if you don't need them but you can't capture those two once the time to take them has passed. Don't be afraid of signing up with a group of like minded individuals for trips such as mine to the Badlands and Black Hills with the Nikonians. You'll meet a lot of nice folks and learn a lot just by paying attention. Trips such as this may seem expensive it is worth every penny to have knowledgeable people put you in the right area at the right time. The rest is up to you.
