Behind The Lens

Location

Bagan, Myanmar

Time

This was taken during late afternoon.

Lighting

The timing for the lighting was key, as my guide knew exactly when the light would be at the right angle and intensity to come through the window in such a way. To emphasise the light shafts we wafted incense around before and during the shoot.

Equipment

Canon 5D Mk III, 24-70mm Canon II IS lens. Handheld, no flash.

Inspiration

I have always been inspired by photos I have seen from Myanmar - something about the light has attracted me to it and when I took my first visit there last year, I wasn't disappointed. I traveled to many places around the country, but Bagan was by far my favourite location - it was almost otherworldly with the light and ancient culture. This photo was taken in a deserted temple in Bagan, off the busy tourist trail. I have my fantastic guide to thank for that - without him, I would never have found it! That afternoon I had been lucky enough to have the opportunity to shoot with a couple of young monks from a nearby monastery. When I saw the temple, the window and the combination of the light and the subject, I knew this was a photo that was going to become one of my favourites.

Editing

I use Lightroom for all my post processing and aside from the usual sharpening and exposure tweaks, I tried to keep editing to a minimum to maintain the authenticity of the scene as I remember seeing it.

In my camera bag

I try to travel light and have just one camera body - the Canon 5D Mk III, along with 2 lenses - the 24-70mm and a 70-200mm (both Canon). I don't use flash lighting, so aside from the usual mass of batteries and memory cards I just have a tripod to complete my kit.

Feedback

As a location, I highly recommend Bagan, Myanmar, in fact Myanmar as a destination in general. Now is the time to go, because it's getting busier all the time and I think it might soon become quite overcrowded. I suggest getting a local photography guide who understands what you're after and has the knowledge and experience to help you achieve it. I went with high expectations, but nothing could have prepared me for what an incredible experience it actually was! Time of day is key for the lighting I was able to capture here, so a local guide will know the best times to shoot, as well as all those hidden spots you'll never get to see from relying just on a guidebook.
