Hi Chris, I was just in Zion last week at a photo workshop, unfortunately it did not include a trip to Angel's Landing. Is this image taken at the observation point or higher? Amazing shot!

Behind The Lens

Location
Zion Nation Park, Utah.
Time
Afternoon.
Lighting
I mostly enjoyed the overcast lighting that provided a mysteriously misty look to the landscape.
Equipment
This image was shot using my Sony NEX-6 with an 18-200mm F3.5 lens.
Inspiration
It's actually really hard to not get a good image at Zion, literally point and shoot and you'll capture something pretty cool. On the top of Angels Landing, I noticed everyone was shooting the valley, which is the iconic Zion National Park photo. So, I thought I would try something different than the rest and shoot towards the Narrows, as the Narrows hike was next on our itinerary. Also, there was this lonely tree sitting pretty close to the edge which offered some really good framing. Unfortunately, it was on this day that 7 canyoneers died in a flash flood. Warnings were established, however, they had already entered the Canyon before anyone could notify them.
Editing
Increased the contrast and saturation to bring out the dark veins in the tree and to bring some definition within the mountain crevices. Also increased the sharpness.
In my camera bag
I will always carry my 18-200mm lens as I find this lens to be great for landscape photography. I do like to carry my wide angle as well for better sky shots. I find the Sony NEX to be great for travellers, it's lightweight and you can take it anywhere.
Feedback
My advise would be to look for the unfamiliar, and instead of trying to capture the iconic image, look for something completely different; play with it, explore and make it your own.
