Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was one of the first fairytale images I created and will always remain one of my favorites. It shows the strong bond that horses and people share. It was taken in a blue bonnet field located in Texas. The field was located next to a library, so it was a little tricky sneaking a horse over to the field without being kicked out of the library parking lot but we managed.

Time

It was taken around 4pm on a cloudy April day. Because of the location we had to shoot at a time when there wouldn't be as many people around. Our Texan Blue Bonnets only stay in bloom for around two weeks so you have to be sure to utilize shooting time as best you can.

Lighting

There was nothing spectacular about the lighting. It was a cloudy day around 4pm. It was truly the beautiful landscape and the love these two share that made this picture.

Equipment

This image was captured with my first camera which was a Rebel T2i and one of the standard kit lens that came with it. There was a great learning curve since this photo and If I were to go back and do it over I would probably add a flash or two and shoot closer to sunset.

Inspiration

I have always been inspired by fairytales, horses and art from romantic eras. This particular photo was inspired by my love of horses and the love they share with people. The bond these two have in this capture says it all.

Editing

The blue bonnets were ideal but the background of this scene was not, there were bbq and flags in the background so I eliminated them with photoshop and color post processing to brighten the colors inspiring a more fairytale like feel. The halter and rope that held the horse were also photo shopped out and some light mist added. All the blue bonnets are not altered other than color processing to brighten them up.

In my camera bag

My camera bag currently carries a lot, but if I could only take a few things I would be sure to bring my Canon EOS 5dsr along with my 24-70mm 2.8 and 70-200mm 2.8 lens. I find that I use them for most everything I do. I would love to add some extra primes to my bag soon!

Feedback

When working with horses, spontinaity and lots of treats are key! You never know when you will get the perfect picture so my best advice is to click away with your camera and don't stop. You will have many pictures to throw out after but the feeling you get when you browse through your files and find a lucky gem (as I like to call them when working with any animals) is phenomenal!
