Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near Holme on Spalding Moor on the edge of the Wolds in East Yorkshire

Time

It was taken at after 9 in the evening just after it'd got dark

Lighting

Because it was dark off camera flash was set up triggered by another photographer as i took the shot.

Equipment

The image was shot on a tripod using a Nikon D7200 with the Nikon 300 PF F4 lens. F7.1 at 1/2 second ISO 400

Inspiration

I'd always wanted to get some pictures of an owl but was lacking in the skills to do so, The shot was taken as part of a set from a photography workshop that i'd been bought to allow me to finally capture an owl

Editing

The RAW image was imported into Lightroom, then cropped and straightened before applying a preset and adding some detail to the image.

In my camera bag

Depending on what i'm planning to shoot my camera bag will usually contain either my Nikon D750 with a Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 or my D7200 coupled with the Nikon 300mm PF F4 and a 1.7x teleconverter. Or as often happens it'll contain all of that just in case i happen upon a situation where i see a bird or animal that can't be captured with a wide angle lens.

Feedback

For the set up I experience a lot of work had been done setting up the hide so I can't profess to have done the hard work but a lot of work had gone into building a hide in a location where the owls frequented, food was put down to tempt the owls into landing in the best positions for photographs. Once the camera was set up in the hide I pre-focused on the gate where the food was with the hope the owl would land. I used a remote shutter to remove any chance of shake. after that it was a matter of being patient and keeping silent in the hope the owl would turn up. The first attempt we sat there for 5 hours with barely a hoot and no sighting of the owl, on the second attempt the owl appeared after about an hour and stayed for 30 mins eating it's food.
