Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Mountsburg Conservation Area in Southwestern Ontario, part nature preserve, part natural wetlands, part raptor centre. The raptor centre includes a renowned rehabilitation facility as well as an education facility. The natural wetlands is home to numerous local birds including osprey, ducks, vultures and geese along with local animals like beavers. Touring the nature preserve, you may be surprised by elk and bison being cared for.

Time

I took this photo in the afternoon sometime on a sunny summer day.

Lighting

The lighting was a challenge for this shot as it was in a very heavily shaded area, with some strong light streaming in from one side.

Equipment

I took the picture using my Sony A350, hand held. I had a 55-300 zoom lens on set at 150.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the majesty of this eagle, even in a rehab facility, the eagle held itself with such dignity and pride. I love nature and wildlife and feel humbled and excited when I see them, much less get photos I feel proud of.

Editing

I used PS 13 to adjust the exposure levels a bit, and I typically adjust contrast, shadows, highlights and mid-tones and do any cropping.

In my camera bag

I keep my new Nikon D5500, 18-55 lens, 55-300 zoom lens, various filters, extra battery (charged), extra memory card, lens cleaning kit. Since I just recently got my new camera I'm still looking to get a separate flash unit and a wide angle lens. I also carry a Canon Eos camera with extra battery.

Feedback

My best advise is take lots of shots from lots of angles....some will be more or less shadowed and have a better angle or tilt of the head....the more shots I take the better. Turn the camera for landscape and portrait views, try higher and lower angles, zoom in and out. This eagle was quite calm but being prepared for action is paramount.
