Location
Spirit Island near Jasper, BCTime
Late afternoonLighting
It was early October, just before they were going to close the boat tours for the season. It was a beautiful, warm and sunny day. It is hard to not get a beautiful shot in that part of the world. I was mesmorized by the color of the clear azure water.Equipment
Canon 70D, Tamron 16-300 @16Inspiration
I was touring the Canadian Rockies in 2015 and took the boat tour to Spirit Island. I took many photos of the island and I tried to get as low as possible so I could capture the luminance of the water. I wish I could have stayed in that location all day as it was so breathtaking.Editing
I did my normal post processing workflow in Photoshop. I didn't do any manipulation to the image. In my camera bag
I also love to shoot macro, especially flowers, so I carry two cameras, besides the 70D, I have a 6D and a Canon 100mm Macro. I have filters, extension tubes, etc, and sometimes I use Lensbaby lenses for macro work. And of course extra batteries and cards. I have a basic Oben tripod.Feedback
Always have your camera with you so you can be ready for that once-in-a-lifetime shot. Be aware of lighting conditions. Be willing to go to where others might not, but beware of potential dangers. Now that we are in the digital age, it's ok to take a zillion shots. Always be shooting, that is how you learn. Know how your camera works but also study how to see what others miss. One way to do that is to take a drawing class because it will help you develop your eye for photography. Learning design principles is very helpful in learning how to compose a shot. I have an art background and that has been extremely helpful for me. I cannot emphasize enough what good post processing can do for a photo. Have those skills is also a must.
