I already had this in colour but wanted to see if it looked any good in black and white, actually I think it really works. I am becoming very partial to monochrome :-) This would look beautiful on a deep red wall :-)

Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken at home, I live in Australia (the land down under) :)
Time
I took this after dinner one night. I wanted to capture Bokeh and really had no idea how to, so I thought I would have a play with my feather, water and lighting :)
Lighting
Ha ha my lighting is so basic. I don't have a grand setup for table-top photography or anything for that matter. All I used in this case was to little head lights. They are great to work with as they aren't too bright and because they are small, you can move them around to get the lighting effects needed for that image :)
Equipment
I used my small light-box, a couple of little head lights, tripod and my Olympus OMD EM1 with a 60mm Macro lens. I also had a spray bottle filled with water. I placed the feather onto a shiny black surface and sprayed the surface with a little bit of water. I managed to pick up the bokeh by experimenting where the lights were placed and the angle of the camera. It was a lot of fun.
Inspiration
I had always wanted to try and capture Bokeh but I didn't know how. So I went searching for something that was soft and pretty and would work well with light. I found this lovely feather in my front yard, thanks to one of the many wild birds I feed. I played around with lighting and water until I was happy with the outcome :)
Editing
Actually, the only post-processing I did was burn the background using the burn tool in Photoshop. Because I had this set-up in a light-box, there was the tell tale line of the joins behind the feather. The photo was originally in colour to which I have among my photos. I decided to see what it would look like in B&W because as you know, sometimes it can work and other times not. I find B&W tends to be a bit harsh and yet it seemed to enhance this image.
In my camera bag
I've only been taking photos for the last 3 1/2 years so I don't have much in the way of equipment like most photographers do. I have my Olympus OMD EM1 with my every day lens, 12-50mm. Also a 75-300mm zoom lens and my 60mm Macro. I always have spare SD cards and yet the amount of times I have been out and about only to realise I left them all at home happens way too often ha ha. I never go anywhere without a good cleaning cloth, a spray water bottle and one of those big puffer thingy's that blow any dust or sand off the lens. Also, I never ever leave the house without mozzie spray, it is so needed if I am out in the bush and especially at sunrise and sunset shoots.
Feedback
The best thing with taking a shot like this is to "play". Play with the lighting, the amount of water you spray for the droplets to create the bokeh. If you have small lights that can be moved around, move them until you feel the light is in the right place so it shows up the details of the feather along with allowing the bokeh to come through. To get the bokeh, make sure your camera is virtually in line with the base of the feather, once you do this, you will start to see the it. It's quite a fun process, just takes a little patience :)
