Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the top of a hill where my son and I love to go walking. It's a favorite spot of mine because I can capture some lovely skies and sunsets.

Time

This was taken in the afternoon in late fall. It had been an unusually raining day and after I picked my son up from school we went for a walk to try to catch some rain and puddles to play.

Lighting

The rain clouds were starting to break up in this shot but there was still a lot of lovely color and detail in the sky, the sun was starting to peek through some of the clouds so I wanted to capture as much detail in the sky as possible.

Equipment

This image was taken with my Nikon D600 and 85 mm 1.8.

Inspiration

Rain in California doesn't come around too much, so whenever there is rain I take my son out to play! He loves umbrellas so this day was a perfect day for umbrellas and photos!

Editing

I didn't want to lose all the detail in the sky when I shot this image so my son was a bit dark in the original. I used a curves adjustment on my son and the umbrella, and bumped up the vibrance a bit. Took the highlights down to bring out as much detail as possible in the sky.

In my camera bag

Nikon D600 and my 85mm 1.8 that I've used since I first starting shooting film two decades ago, the lens is still going strong and the lens I used most. I have a 50mm 1.4 G and a 105mm 2.8 Macro.

Feedback

I shot a lot of images of my son with this umbrella in a short amount of time. I knew I wanted detail in the sky and capture his movement and expressions as well. I kept shutter my speed as high as possible, this was 1/2500 sec, I gave him the umbrella and just starting shooting as he was having fun. Candid moments with kids is all about letting them have fun! While running around with them to capture it.
