Behind The Lens

Location

Yosemite National Park, CA, USA

Time

During sunrise

Lighting

I originally wanted a shot from this vantage at sunrise. However, on the way down to the valley I kept getting side tracked with the dramatic that I kept pulling over for shots. This was probably about 45mins after sunrise and fortunately enough I was still able to come away with a shot I like.

Equipment

This was shot on Canon 5D MK II with a Canon 24-105 F4 L IS.

Inspiration

I saw a photo by Michael Frye of this area in a publication. It was Yosemite in winter and prior to seeing that photo, I have never been here during winter. The shot was so amazing with the snow and the band of light on El Capitan. I wanted to capture a shot with the winter conditions. Later I found out, Michael's was a sunset photo, but none the less motivation was inspired.

Editing

I did RAW adjustments in Lightroom (WB, slight shadow and exp bump, slight color adjustment). After that I take the file into photoshop and do selective dodge/burn. I didn't clean my lens at the time of shoot, so there were some cloning housekeeping to be done.

In my camera bag

I usually pack a wide angle and a zoom. Remote triggers and lots of memory, batteries and cleaning cloths. I also stash away a snack or two.

Feedback

Do research using various photo galleries. Many people post a wealth of information in their postings, from location, time taken and even camera exif. Use tools like photographers ephemris to track sun's direction from a vantage. For my shot, ironically I was inspired by Michael Frye's sunset shot that I went during sunrise, so better research on my part for next time. The Internet is a wealth of knowledge now and the more you can research in an area, the better you can come up with a plan on how to position yourself for a successful trip. Of course, Mother Nature will do what she pleases but we can at least do our best to prepare.
