Behind The Lens

Location

Taken at a fairly hidden waterfall on the northern part of the Big Island of Hawaii.

Time

I had gone on a scouting trip around the island this day. It turned out to be a successful trip but I felt like I needed to visit a waterfall before I headed home so I stopped here in the late afternoon and made it to the falls just a little before sunset.

Lighting

It was very overcast and the sky seemed to be threatening rainfall so the scene was fairly dark and evenly lit which worked for the scene.

Equipment

Shot with a Sony a7 and Rokinon 24mm on a tripod. This is a panorama of three shots merged in Lightroom.

Inspiration

I had been to this waterfall many times before but either hadn't brought my camera or only had harsh, contrasty light which I didn't feel complimented the scene. I knew this evening that the light would be complementary and I was fortunate enough to have the place to myself and happened to come away with this image.

Editing

Aside from merging the three shots into one, I did minimal post-processing on this. All it really needed was a slight crop, a bit more color and a little dodging and burning.

In my camera bag

I like to keep it simple. My main lens is a 16-35 and I usually have a zoom as well. I nearly always have a tripod on me in case I feel like shooting timelapse or a long exposure. I also keep a dust blower, microfiber cloths, a remote trigger, and a polar filter with me at all times.

Feedback

Be patient and always assess a scene from multiple vantage points before you decide on a composition. Waterfalls can be tricky with spray and moisture so make sure you have multiple microfiber cloths hander to wipe off your lens. I wish I would have had a wider lens with me but I made do by shooting three horizontal shots and creating a vertical panorama. Circular polarizers are also a must-have for scenes like this!
