Location
Banff National Park is a paradise in all of the photographers. A seven minutes drive from the townsite of Banff where Vermilion Lake is sitting. Consist of 3 lakes connecting each other feeding the Bow River and giving a grand view of Rundle Mountain and surrounding.Time
Chasing light is one of the hardest part in landscape photography. You need to be in the location an hour before the sunrise/sunset to do scouting. This image is taken during sunrise. One of the best light i experience in my landscape photography. Sun rays and the colour of the clouds is just perfect. Looks like burning up in Rundle Mountain. The serenity of this place is just outstanding. The log sitting on the lake giving direction to Rundle Mountain and perfectly in place between of the twigs.Lighting
I think nothing. Its all about nature. What you see is what you get. If the nature decide to colour the clouds during the golden hour then your lucky. Just accept what mother nature give to you and capture it. Thats why for me landscape photography is all about luck and frustration.Equipment
To capture like this image you need to have a filters to make dramatic and artistic look. Understanding the light situation and how to extend the exposure using filters. Im using Nikon D800 with 16-35mm F4 lens. To extend the exposure I'm using 6 stop ND filter combination with 3 stop Soft GND filter to balance the sky and foreground. To get the sharpness of the image I'm using the Benro Travel Angel Tripod and Promote shutter cable release. Remember its not the camera who's making the photo, photographer is making the photo and the camera is the essential to capture it.Inspiration
The amazing scenery here in Banff inspired me to take a photo. It is surrounded with huge mountains and lake like a mirror on their serenity. Vermilion Lake is one of the picturesque around Banff area and photograph a thousand times. Every time i photograph this place I'm aiming for the perfect light, one day mother nature decide to show the beauty of sunrise in Vermilion Lake and i was their to capture it. Since then i was engage in chasing light around Canadian Rockies.Editing
In my landscape photography, post processing is the most critical stage. I need to preserve the natural looking without adding any colour and removing subject just to make it clean images. Combination of Lightroom and Photoshop is the most software i used in my post processing. But still it depends on the photographer taste on how they do post processing, it represent on their emotion and creativity. In my camera bag
My main camera body and lens is always on my bag. Just to add the list of important things to bring if your shooting landscape, are extra battery, head lamps, extra remote shutter release cable. Adding to this is waders, i normally shoot on the lake and most of the time just to get my composition i want. Shower caps, yes shower caps when the rain start to pour and you in the middle of your composition atleast you have something to put in front of the filters. Bring more lens cleaner, here in Canadian Rockies the weather is unpredictable sometimes it was perfectly clear suddenly the clouds roll then starts to rain. And dress appropriately according on the season.Feedback
Landscape photography is all about lights, composition and and location. Maybe we visit the same place and creates a different perspective. Always look for the leading lines or interesting subject in the foreground that give the representation of the place. Avoid the negative space on the image and check the horizon. And preserve the natural looking of the place you photograph. Happy shooting. Embrace, experience and enjoy the beauty of nature.
