Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth Maine. Maine is my beautiful home, and there is so much to explore and capture besides light houses.

Time

Maine winters tend to be quite monotone. Grey sky, white ground, bare trees. On this day, it seemed like a miracle as the sun began to peep out through the clouds in the mid afternoon.

Lighting

This photo was unplanned, and was a spur of the moment capture once I saw the sunshine flow through the fence and hit his face.

Equipment

This was shot with my canon sx10is, no other equipment was used.

Inspiration

Maine winters tend to be quite monotone. Grey sky, white ground, bare trees. On this day, it seemed like a miracle as the sun began to peep out through the clouds in the mid afternoon. The afternoon inspired my best friend and I to take a winter walk. He jumped over the fence of a fort wall and was talking to me from the other side. When the sun peaked out and went through the gaps casting shadows on my friends face, I was inspired to take some photos.

Editing

I felt as though this picture would be stronger visually and emotionally by putting it in black and white. I did minimal editing to slightly enhance the strength of the shadows by adjusting the highlights and shadows.

In my camera bag

I am just an amateur at this point, so my equipment is minimal. I normally bring my canon sx10is with me and my tripod. I hope to get a new camera soon with some lenses!

Feedback

This photo was not exactly what I was intending to capture on this day. I wasn't expecting for the sun to come out, I wasn't expecting for my friend to hop the fence. Life is unpredictable, and that often leads us to get some of the best photographs. My advice would to make sure you go into the day, camera in hand ready to take and discover whatever moment the world gives you to capture.
