Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Toronto, Ontario at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). I was taking my son to one of the art classes and we popped upstairs to the Frank Gehry staircase afterwards and I got this shot.

Time

I have been up and down the staircase many times since it was built, but this particular time was about 11:30 pm after Tom's art class and the light was just right.

Lighting

The way the light was illuminating parts of the staircase and some parts in shadow gave the effect of an illusion so that the viewer is not sure which parts are in the foreground and which are in the background.

Equipment

I used an iPhone 5C camera and then edited the photo using the Snapseed app.

Inspiration

I love to take pictures of architecture in downtown Toronto and usually zoom in on a part to make an abstract image. I'm very interested in Op-Art, particularly the work of Bridget Riley, and I like art which makes you look at the world differently and also makes you work at the image. I also like textures and reflective surfaces and the way they can change when the light hits them a certain way.

Editing

Minimal post processing using the Snapseed app, adjusting the saturation and contrast the increase the effect.

In my camera bag

I mostly use an iPhone but also have a Nikon DSLR and use a telephoto lens to get close-up shots of buildings. I also have a medium format Pentax and a tripod which I sometimes use for these shots and also landscapes.

Feedback

Just take lots of pictures and you will develop an eye for the surreal or the extraordinary in the everyday. I always have a camera handy and there are always interesting things to shoot in an urban environment if you know how to look.
