Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Venice, Louisiana, the most southern part of the state.

Time

This was taken on September 29, 2015 just after sunrise. The actual time was 7:04 a.m., CST.

Lighting

Lighting is an unknown variable until it occurs. In sunrise (or Sunset) shots, lighting varies quickly and is affected by atmosphere, clouds and foreground subjects. Also as the sun rises (or sets) the colors will continually change with the angle of the sun penetrating the atmosphere.

Equipment

To capture this sunrise on the marsh I used a Canon EOS T3 with a Tamron SP 70-300mm Di Vc lens with a polarizing filter. The camera was hand held.

Inspiration

I have always been drawn to God's creation and the different canvas he puts out there for our pleasure. Low light conditions is a challenge I enjoy, especially shots in the fog. I drive 180 miles to this area at least once a week, daily if there is fog. These bayous and bald cypress marshes are disappearing at an alarming rate and want to document areas like this for others to see what we are losing.

Editing

I do not use any photoshop of any kind on my photos. I am "old school", been shooting since 1965 and believe in the challenge of capturing a shot au naturale. I do bracket my shots and shoot RAW. Post processing of the RAW images is done with Canon's "Digital Photo Professional".

In my camera bag

My bag is actually a travel suitcase. It includes tw0 (2) Canon EOS Rebel T3's; one (1) with a Canon 18-55mm; and one with a Tamron SP 70-300mm, F/4-5.6 Di VC. Also have a Canon EOS M5 with a Tamron 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 DiII VC HLD. For a spare lens there is a Tamron SP AF Di 200-500mm 1:5-6.3. Extras in clude a GoPro, extra batteries, tripods, chargers, cleaning kit, flashes, remote control, and camera covers in case of rain.

Feedback

Persistence is what is needed in getting colorful sunrise/sunset images. You do not know if it will be a colorful or bland occurance. Find a location that you like for the setting and keep going back there. If it is going to be a cloudless morning, do not count on a colorful sunrise. Fall and winter are my favorite times to capture these images. It seems that the colder air this time of year produces more dramatic effects. If your camera allows, set it up for auto bracketing. Do not maintain focus on the sun longer than it takes for the shot in order to prevent damage to your equipment. A polarizing filter helps in getting better contrast.
