Behind The Lens

Location

This image was the result of a lot of planning and work over a number of weeks. Working with makeup artist Siminee Campbell from Honey & Rose Makeup Artistry, I planned the tears and classical beauty look for this image. Model Krysten Kaye was chosen for her beauty and ability to give emotion. This was shot in my home studio at Logan Village, QLD, Australia. My studio is a 6mx6m space that I have built lining and insulating the walls and air-conditioning the space to allow year round shooting in our hot weather. The image was taken in November, summer in Australia.

Time

As a studio image the time of day for light is not critical, but I like to shoot in the mornings so that the model is fresh and we have time to develop the shoot creating emotion and making creative decisions as needed.

Lighting

For me, lighting is everything which is why I choose to mainly shoot in the studio. This image was shot with a single Jinbei HD 600 strobe using a 1.5m octagonal soft box. This is my favourite light, as from above, it provides large soft light that suits beauty. I love the use of light by painters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer and this has a large influence on my work.

Equipment

I shoot with a Nikon D610 full frame camera. This image was shot with a Nikon f1.4 50mm lens. This shot was taken on 1/160 sec at f7.1 I used a Jenbei HD 600 Strobe with a 1.5m octagonal softbox on an overhead crane for this shot. I also tether to my 27" Mac when shooting in the studio using Adobe Lightroom. I find this enables me to see the image as we shoot and ensure I am getting the shot. It also has the advantage of being able to discuss the image with the model to make adjustments to expression and posing.

Inspiration

I am a trained visual artist and I find influence in the great painters. This series was inspired by Gaustav Klimpt 1862-1918 Austrian Symbolist painter known best for his portraits of women and his gold leaf style most influenced by Japanese painting. I wanted to create an image that gave a sense of beauty and elegance while contrasting against the geometric background that draws upon Klimpt's shapes and geometry in his work. I created the background using pieces of card board, gluing them to a cement sheet. I then painted this board using gold silver and back to give me texture and depth to the back of the image.

Editing

I shoot in raw and process my workflow through Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop CS6. For this image I wanted to create that perfect porcelain skin to contrast to the models dark hair and deep red lips. I used a skin technique in photoshop using colour fill layers ( grouped) and soft light blending modes. Finally using a mask and white brush to reveal the lighter skin tone while retaining the details. I sharpen eyes and vibrance to make those amazing eyes pop. My final editing tip is to create a overlay layer filled with 50% grey. I use this to dodge and burn the image. With portraits I use this to ensure the conturing and hair details show good tonality. I believe this adds dimension to the final result.

In my camera bag

My go to kit is my Nikon D610 with a 24mm-80mm Nikkor lens, my f1.4 50mm Nikkor lens, and spare battery! I usually have my speedlight SB600 in the bag just incase I am somewhere where I need it! My final must have in my bag is my f2.8 70mm-200mm Nikkor Lens. This is great for fashion or motorsports!

Feedback

As artists we learn from those who created before us. Being a student of art history I believe will improve every photographers work. Composition, colour, subject matter, tonality and the use of light are the things that I have learnt from studying others. To capture an image like this obviously a lot of planning must go into the shoot from casting the right model, creating the background and props and most importantly the final look of the makeup art to ensure the image meets the vision. The final advice is that do not be scared to learn how to do something new in post production. There are many tutorials to help you achieve the look you are wanting for your image.
