Location
This image was taken in Norphlet, Arkansas in front of an adorable old home and is part of my series "Secret's They Keep". This shoot started out as a book cover request for a single image but soon turned into something more meaningful for me.Time
We shot this set in the morning from about 8-10am. We watched the light the day before the shoot and decided we liked the morning mood.Lighting
The natural light at this location was gorgeous. The only additional thing we used was a reflector for a little fill on the faces.Equipment
I used my Canon 5D Mark II with the 50mm lens (which is on my camera 95% of the time)Inspiration
As I mentioned earlier, this started with a book cover request for a single image. I fell in love with each dress we chose, the house, the era and feeling. It reminded me of all the stories my mother told me about growing up in a house with ten children. Money was hard to come by, and everything they owned had to be shared. Each hand made dress was passed down from the oldest, and they were cherished deeply. She always says they were very poor, but as children, they had no idea. All they knew was love, which they had in abundance. My mom has Alzheimer's and although her short term memory is gone, her childhood memories are still crystal clear. I infused her stories into my series "Secrets They Keep".Editing
Post processing on this set was simple. I have a few of my mom's childhood photographs and I wanted to recreate that tonal feeling as accurately as I possible. The muted pastels and lower contrast were very important parts of this "story".In my camera bag
In my bag I keep two cameras, Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 5D Mark IV. Lenses range from Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM all the way down to my favorite, the Canon 50mm 1.8.Feedback
You can get all the technical advice in the world, but the single most important rule to remember is to "feel" it. An image can be technically perfect, but still cold and lifeless. Stop and think about what you want your photograph to say. Close your eyes and immerse yourself in that experience. Picture what life was like in your mind. Feel it. Only after that, create your image.
