Southern 630 Steam Engine passed by my job a few years ago. In today's world of diesel and bullet trains, it's not every day you see an actual steam engine thundering down the tracks. Color just didn't suit this photo. It needed some age. :)

Thank you! It was a site to see this thing barreling down the tracks! I'm honored it won an award.

This photo was taken outside of my office building. I work as IT for a concrete manufacturing/engineering company, and our plant is right next to a railroad line. A friend of mine is a rail fan, and was keeping tabs on this steam engine. It's not everyday you can see an actual steam engine going down the tracks. I left the office for a few minutes when I heard it would be making its way past the plant. I tried to position myself to where I wouldn't get any of the crowd of people who were also waiting to catch a glimpse of this steam engine.Time
This was taken in the middle of the day, but luckily, it was overcast so it wasn't too bright outside.Lighting
Natural lighting from the cloud cover. Nothing special about that.Equipment
Canon 5D Mark II and 50L @ f/8. Handheld.Inspiration
It's not everyday you see a steam engine making its way along the tracks. I love antiques, and there's something to be said about antique machinery. As the saying goes, "they don't make them like they used to."Editing
I gave this image a vintage, sort of faded look to go with the fact that it's a steam engine that was built over 100 years ago (1904 according to the web).In my camera bag
This photo was taken with my Canon gear, which I no longer own. Currently, I always have my XT-1, 23mm, 35mm, and 56mm lenses in my bag. I also carry a manual flash, along with a rogue flash bender, and color correction filters for the flash, and my iPad mini. I also have in my bag a Polaris SPD100 light meter, but it doesn't see much use as I usually eyeball my exposure settings.Feedback
This photo was taken after a little bit of research as to when it would be passing by my area. It also helped to have a friend who is into trains. If something interests you, research it! See if anything interesting is within driving distance that you can't pass up, and go for it. Some things may only come around once in a lifetime, so don't think about it. Do it.
