Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a back road in S. Pomfret Vermont, not far from where I live. This beautiful property once belonged to Joe Perry of Aerosmith. He would come to Vermont with his horses. He sold the property about 10 years ago.

Time

This photo was taken early afternoon on a beautiful blue sky fall day. I was out looking for colorful fall foliage shots as we were almost at peak but remember the colors on this particular road were not quite as far along as I thought they would be. Nevertheless I was attracted to the property and the colors that were so set up to take some shots.

Lighting

It was a sunny day and the buildings were backlit just a bit. I liked the shadow across the driveway that the lighting conditions provided as well as some of the shadows around the trees. The natural light illuminated the trees and colors nicely.

Equipment

I used a Canon t3i, Canon 18-55 3.5 and an Induro tripod. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

Vermont is so beautiful in the fall with it's wonderful colorful foliage. The fall is one of my favorite times of the year (winter and snow a close second) to take photos and Mother Nature makes it easy providing such beautiful colors. I was on a quest to spend the day traveling the back roads of Vermont looking for pretty shots. This property has a beautiful setting and I knew I wanted to compose this looking down the driveway using the fence with it's leading lines to lead your eye down the driveway. So, I guess you could say the shot was there for the taking.

Editing

I did minimal post- processing. I am self taught and still learning. I decreased the shadows a bit on the buildings that were backlit and also did some cropping. I don't generally like photos over saturated so don't think I had to play with that.

In my camera bag

Canon t3i, Canon 18-55 3.5, Canon 55-250 4.0, Canon 50 Prime, Canon Extension tube 25, Induro tripod ( lots on my wish list )

Feedback

Well, in this case something similar would be a beautiful fall scene waiting for the taking. There were no adverse weather conditions or mountains to climb to get this shot. I WILL say there are still important things to think about, such as composition and lighting. I am a painter so I think that helps me sometimes with composition. Walk around, get down low, move to different sides, angles and take a lot of different shots. I would also say a tripod is important. I was a long time without a tripod and didn't miss it until I got one. Sure I go out quick without it and I'm still often happy with what I get but when I have a goal in mind and I want to be sure and get my best shots I take it. I love my tripod and I used it for this shot. My only other advice would be shoot, shoot, shoot.
