I lived in Singapore once upon a time. There sure have been a lot of changes since I lived there. I can remember walking down to see the Merlion statue.

Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this image while in downtown Singapore overlooking the Marina Bay Double Helix Bridge and Marina Bay Sands.

Time

It was later in the afternoon and getting close to the golden hour. I had walked completely around the bay shooting from various points and was working my way back out to the harbor for the sun set.

Lighting

The skies were relatively clear, especially for Singapore, with a bit of haze in the air. The sun was low and to the left of the bridge lighting up the spirals, water and buildings in the frame nicely.

Equipment

I used Canon 5 D III, on a tripod with a Carl Zeis 15mm ultra wide lens. I had to place the forward leg of the tripod through the railing of the walkway where I took the picture from.

Inspiration

I had noticed the spirals on the bridge on an earlier trip, when I attempted the same shot without a tripod. I wanted to put the framework of the bridge in the picture extending from the frame inward as leading lines towards tall building in the back. My initial attempt was successful but I knew I could do better so I returned on my next trip with a tripod and got what I wanted.

Editing

Yes, this is a HDR shot using multiple images which I edited several ways to include this Black and White version. Of note, there was a line of bright yellow buoys in the water below the bridge which I removed from this edit because i felt they detracted from the image by drawing the eye down from the bridge.

In my camera bag

I generally carry my Cannon 5DIII with three or four prime or telephoto lenses ranging out to either 100mm or 400mm depending on where I am and what I want to shoot. I also will take a tripod if I'm going to be out in low light, and a remote shutter switch.

Feedback

The tripod was key to capturing the range of images for HDR. In Singapore the weather is usually overcast, hazy or cloudy, making fast shutter speeds more difficult. I would also recommend a day in the middle of the week with less tourists out and about. The week during this second shot was just prior to the Grand Prix race being held there and there was a lot of tourists out. This made it difficult to get a set of captures without random ghost images. If you look closely at the color version (Posted in my gallery) you can see the lower half of a guy walking on the bridge. I was more successful at editing him out of this version.
