My first trip to UAE and I was absolutely stunned by the Metropolis, Gotham-view from the Dubai Metro.Time
This is one of my favourite images of Dubai, taken in a sunset which is both primal desert, yet a metropolis as well. I had a new camera for this holiday and I was excited about playing around with the settings in order to capture, what is, through my eyes. Sunset for me is always a magical time of day.Lighting
I chose the sunset as it is both desert and city. I was trying to make the reflection on the tracks draw you into that world of the softened cultural mores, mysterious yet straight forward; like an enigma of something between worlds that Dubai is; between night and day, sand and water, western and eastern; old and new - what better time than at the end of one day, right at the coming of the desert night. To me, the lighting seemed perfect at this precise hour, as the city lights begin to twinkle against the backdrop of fading dusty, desert salmon pink.Equipment
I am 'running' an Olympus OM-D, EM-10 with a 14-52mm zoom lens.Inspiration
Dubai is perhaps one of the most paradoxical places on the planet. Nestled on the edge of a desert, the brainchild of one man, who's vision was to make the desert flourish. It really is an historic achievement, equaling the incredible architecture of Rome and Athens, Egypt and Babylon. I was trying to capture the fading sun in a way that said, 'Desert,' yet 'Modern 'Memphis,' at the same time. I needed half-light to capture the surreal feeling of being in this place, that is anything but ordinary..and nothing inspires like a desert sunset... twinkle.Editing
No, just added a frame to this one.In my camera bag
I always pack my Olympus OM-D EM-10 since I first got it. I love its versatility. I have a short lens 14-52mm and a telephoto 70-300mm, that I take everywhere. I pack my battery charger and cable IN my case, permanently and advice anyone do the same, even if it means a bigger bag.Feedback
Dubai is a fascinating portal of stark contrasts, between the middle east and the west. I do not think there was one moment in any day I was there, when my camera wasn't taking pictures of something amazing. My advice here would be to use the unusual light to highlight the 'theme' of your shot, at specific times at sunrise and sunset, when the light is anything but ordinary, with dramatic and obvious desert overtones adding to the splendour of the architecture and the incredible opulence of our age.
