Location
We were living in Zacatecas, Mexico, in 2007, when my son was about 2 years old. I was doing a study abroad trip for college. My son was watching a movie on his little DVD player and he looked so focused and beautiful watching his show, I just had to snap a picture of him.Time
This was in the middle of the afternoon, but we were inside so the light I was using to highlight his face was from the screen on the DVD player.Lighting
The only light in the room was an overhead incandescent light and the light coming from the screen on the DVD player. I love a good challenge of using unusual light sources in my photographs.Equipment
The only camera equipment used for this shot was a Sony CyberShot point-and-shoot.Inspiration
The expression on my son's face and his intensive focus on the movie he was watching. It must have been an emotional part of the movie for him to be so focused with a hint of concern on his face. I love to take candid photographs of my children and anyone really. I don't like posed pictures because the emotion on people's faces is staged. It is not a true reflection of who that person or animal is and how they are relating to that moment in time. I'm drawn to raw emotion and expressions in faces and body language.Editing
No. This photo was shot in a black & white setting on the camera. I also like the little shadow that runs across my son's nose. It's truly a simple, yet beautiful photo! In my camera bag
Now-a-days, I have my Canon EOS 70d, which was my birthday present to myself. I am a working Mom to my son who is now 11, a 6 year old girl, and a 15 year old exchange student from South Korea. Unfortunately, I don't have as much time as I'd like to explore my beautiful state and take pictures. So, I venture out with my camera in hand whenever I have the opportunity, but not much else. Otherwise, when I do have the chance to make it an adventure, I carry a variety of filters, my cameras (I also have a Canon T1i), and a tripod.Feedback
I am probably less calculated in my photographing than others out there. I like to look for the emotion and body language of my subjects. What are they doing? What are they feeling? What light do I have? Pay attention to the details both on your subject and surrounding your subject. Take the shot if the behavior and emotion affect you. Take many shots. Lots and lots of shots. The more shots I have of a moment, the better chance I'll have "that one" that really speaks to me.
