Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during a vacation to Hawaii. We were on the island of Maui, staying at the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort.

Time

My wife and I were strolling the grounds of the resort after eating a wonderful meal in the resort restaurant. We noticed the sun was setting as we approached a clearing, where they normally hold the luau (however this was not the night for the luau), and I thought the setting was perfect for a sunset shot to remember the evening.

Lighting

When shooting sunset shots, I generally try to find a way to capture as much depth in the photo as possible. In this case, the higher level (and closer) clouds had not yet picked up the glow from the setting sun.

Equipment

I was using a relatively new camera for me (at the time). It was an Olympus E-20-P. I know it is a dinosaur, but I still have the camera to this day. It has a wonderful feel to the hands while holding it to frame a shot.

Inspiration

I enjoy taking sunset photos. There's something about the end of the day, in particular a perfect day, that sets the soul at ease and causes one to reflect on what a wonderful day it had been. Capturing a photo to remember the day, the place, and the people you were with does a body good.

Editing

Not for this one. Mother Nature did all the work!

In my camera bag

These days I travel with an Olympus micro four-thirds camera. I have an assortment of lenses to cover most scenarios for shooting. I don't usually carry my tripod unless I know I'm going to shoot something that requires absolute stillness. I love the PEN camera due to its portability, yet professional-level performance. Since acquiring it, I have been able to "play" more with my shots as I'm shooting them and rely less on post-processing to get a desired look.

Feedback

Always be prepared. You never know when the shot is going to present itself. I carry a camera in all my vehicles, and I take my favorite camera and lenses with me everywhere I travel. Also, be patient, but don't be afraid to take several shots. You never know which will turn out best, or inspire you.
