Composing this picture actually was a profound experience for me. When the cadets were lining up on the street before their armoury, the scene didn’t even look like it was in my time period. I felt like I had suddenly been transported back to the 1940’s.

I like the look of innocence about this group. They’re so obviously green, in uniform and no doubt very proud but still very unsure of themselves and their circumstances. They sort of have that, “Oooooooh, I don’t know what’s going on!” look but you just know that they’re going to do just fine. I feel honoured whenever I see this picture.
