Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Cardiff outside the museum

Time

This is one of my favourite images of the day. We had gone there as a group of four, two models and two photographers and this was probably around 3pm in the afternoon.

Lighting

Although it was daylight, my colleague brought his speedlite and godox soft box on a stand. He held the lighting close enough to get good catchlights in Karina's eyes.

Equipment

I took my camera, Canon 700D and used a Canon lens 50mm borrowed from my colleague to take this shot. As stated earlier, we used a Godox soft box on a speedlite and stand to gain light on the face.

Inspiration

Karina was a fantastic posing model. We had walked Cardiff and this was the final set of shots. The museum is a grand building and the steps gave a great background for the shot. It was just a case of looking at locations and this one worked well.

Editing

I shot in raw and post processed very little, but used the dodge tool for highlights in the eyes, sharpening tool for eyelashes and healing brush tool to remove skin blemishes. I used the levels to give me the tone I required. The exposure was okay so no need to mess in raw.

In my camera bag

I always carry a speedlite on location, together with plenty of rechargeable batteries. My camera, plus two canon zoom EF lens 24-105mm and 70 to 200mm. I like to carry also lens cleaning tool and a light groundsheet to put my equipment and myself on if necessary. Spare memory cards too.

Feedback

It is important to have a wide aperture and a fixed focal lens. I cannot achieve the same results with my zoom lens as the aperture only goes to F4 and this was F2.8 in order to have the nice blur in the background. Spot focus on the eye. The lighting held close to the subject by my colleague meant I had more flexibility than if it was on the camera itself.
