Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the metro of Budapest, Hungary. It was actually the second attempt to get this view, that's why it's called 2.0. The first one was in colour and not so well-centered.

Time

There are only two times of the day when you can take a shot like this. I'm a nightowl, so this one was taken around 10 PM at night. It was a bautifully cold winter night and I just just about to start taking a few long exposure shots of famous spots in the city with my tripod.

Lighting

The lights of the oldest metro of the European mainland create a creepy atmosphere and sometimes even a horror movie feeling. I had to choose a high ISO to get what I wanted.

Equipment

I shot it with my good old Nikon D90, which is still in use. I think it was along with an old Tamron 18-200 mm lens. No tripod, no flash, no other equipment.

Inspiration

It was the film 'Kontroll' by Nimród Antal (not to be confused with 'Control' by Anton Corbijn). The whole movie was filmed in Budapest's metro system and it has exactly that eerie, depressing feeling I wanted to catch for the photo.

Editing

I'm not a big Photoshop wizard, so I just converted it into sweet black and white tones and cut the image slightly.

In my camera bag

Depends on the situation. When I'm strolling around in a town, like I did on that day, I rely on a broad range of focal lengths. Back in those days, I always had my 18-200 mm and my 10-24 mm wide-angle lens with me. Today, I can choose from a much bigger amount of lenses, so I try to prepare the right tools for every situation.

Feedback

Be patient. Underground, you might have to wait some time to get a good situation. The good thing is, there's no bad weather in a subway. The bad side, well, you could miss your train. And people will look at you, you stalker! Just kidding, go out (or underground) and shoot. In most cities it's allowed to take photos there, I think. At least, I have never been asked to stop taking pictures by staff or security workers.
