Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a family day out at Wingham Wildlife Park near Canterbury. I always take a macro lens and a sigma 150-500mm when I go there as there is never a shortage of good subjects to shoot

Time

I think it was late afternoon, but I don't really remember. In any event the shot was taken inside the reptile house so the light was never natural

Lighting

The interior of the reptile house is artificially lit and the shot taken through glass into a small enclosure also lit from within. No flash of course - that's not fair on the animals

Equipment

The shot was taken with my 50mm f2.8 macro attached to a sony A99v and the shot was taken hand held

Inspiration

Haha! Me and the reptiles just seem to have an understanding.....

Editing

I'm self taught in all things photographic from what equipment to use, to how to shoot and post-processing. I go through phases of light or heavy touch editing. I'm really interested in making the image into a memorable piece of art rather than worrying about how much editing i'll do afterwards. In this case, I layered the image so I could make everything but the eye B&W so it really stands out against the scaly skin. There's a fair bit of noise in the image and i've defocused around the edges to soften it.

In my camera bag

Depends on the shoot. For a general purpose shoot I'll carry my sigma 150-500mm and 2X teleconverter, a Vario-Sonnar 16–35mm F2.8 ZA SSM wide angle zoom and 50mm f2.8 macro. If i'm working in a studio or at home the macro stays packed but i'll switch to a 50mm, 85mm and 135mm prime lens combo. I always carry my blower in my pack too as dust on the sensor is really annoying to find out about after the event

Feedback

Just enjoy what you do. It shows in the images you make. Whether you pick your moments or machine gun the subject - always do it with a smile on your face
