Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Old Laura Homestead which is on the Battlecamp Road heading North from Cooktown on the base of Cape York in Queensland. What caught my eye was the face made by the round head lights and the hanging bumper bar giving the old truck a comical forlorn look.

Time

We arrived around 11:00 am, mid morning which worked really well to keep the shadow to a minimum & give me bright harsh lighting to highlight the stark conditions of the country we were in.

Lighting

Midday sunlight helped to highlight the country we were in remote, dry and harsh adding to the plight of this poor lost sole. You can almost feel the heat coming off the ground.

Equipment

This picture was taken with an old Olympus SZ-10, no tripod or any other equipment was used.

Inspiration

As I walked up I noticed the crooked smile made by the bumper on the front of the old truck so I moved around taking several shots until I got the one I wanted. This angle shows the crooked smile but also highlights the run down and dilapidated condition of the old truck.

Editing

I do not use any post-processing I have used filters a couple of times but this almost feels like cheating, you can normally get what you want in a photo buy trying different times of day, different angles, laying on the ground, anything to get the feel of the photo right.

In my camera bag

I travel light with my trusty Olympus SZ-10, a Panasonic Lumix camera DMC-FT5 and my Samsung S5 mobile phone. you do not need expensive cameras or gear to get sweet shots I don't carry a tripod sometimes I lean against a tree, vehicle or fence post to steady my hand. Because my cameras are very basic I don't use any lenses just built in zoom and functions.

Feedback

You do not need expensive equipment or high end gear to have a love of photography. Just consider the shot you want to take then what you want it to display. Consider the lighting and time your shot accordingly. Consider the best angle to take your shot move around, lay on the ground, climb a near by tree to get elevation. Go nuts and rattle a few off it is not like the old days when the cost of film restricted the number of angles you could take. Just go out with the cameras you have and just have fun with it. The more you do it the more rewarding it is.
