Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Wrightsville Beach NC. It is the first sunlight to appear as the end of Hurricane Joaquin passed over. The clouds above are the last out bands of the hurricane. I was walking along the beach looking at the damage done by the storm surge. I was really looking to document the damage storm surge can do. As I was reaching the end of the island I noticed some light appearing around the horizon. It was as if the sun was saying here I am, I will see you tomorrow. The sun was there for just a moment. Yet it was long enough to know that tomorrow was going to be a better day!

Time

This image was taken somewhere between 6:30 and 7 at night. I didn't have a watch with me at the time but could tell that the light was fading fast. The clouds over the ocean were darkening with every step I took. I knew I had to turn back as I had probably walked 1.5 miles. I knew I would end up getting back after dark.

Lighting

The lighting was gray for most of my walk. I really was looking for some black and white shots. But for a few minutes, the sun broke through and bathed the entire area in light. A ray of hope after a hurricane.

Equipment

I used the canon t6i which I recently had purchased. I was still trying to learn how to use it at the time. I didn't have a tripod nor any filters. It was hand held with a new camera.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the sun. It had been cloudy and raining for a couple of days. Seeing the sun meant that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The weather will get better and life will return to normal.

Editing

At the time of this photo, I had a very limited knowledge of post processing. I really didn't do much for this image. Since then I have learned how to improve my images with lightroom and some photoshop. I really try to get it right in camera because I am not real good with post processing. It is a learning experience every time.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my canon t6i camera. I have an EF 50 mm 1.8, EF 70-300, and the EFS 18-135mm. I carry all three at all times. I also have a set of Tiffen Neutral density filters, ND Grad, and circular polarizing filter. I carry my tripod on the side of my bag on a bag strap.

Feedback

Always be prepared for anything. Going out for this shot, I limited my abilities because I thought I would only take a certain type of shot. I wasn't prepared for what happened. I feel like I could have done better had I been prepared. Some of my decision was based on needing to move quickly due to the hurricane and ocean waves. I didn't want to be slowed down by the added weight. By not bringing everything I would need, I wasn't prepared. I captured the image the best I could under the situation.
