Behind The Lens

Location

This is the ever so famous Maroon Bells. It sits just above Aspen Highlands ski resort in Colorado.

Time

This was mid afternoon.

Lighting

This was a tricky time on this specific day. The light was coming in almost directly above me and even though there were many clouds there were not any to block the sun. The sun dive however make for some crisp, sharp highlights on the clouds.

Equipment

When I took this photograph I was using a Nikon D3100 with a Nikon 18-70 3.5 on a tripod and a uv filter.

Inspiration

I was on an annual trip through the mountains of Colorado in the Fall with my mother. This is an exceptional time of year because all of the aspen trees change colors at the same time. So when I got to this stop of the trip I knew it was time to sit down and get it just right. (I only wish the wind would have let up so I could get a reflection of the mountains in the water. But, it never happened.)

Editing

I used Lightroom 6 with a touch of clarity and a small boost in vibrance but started out with adjust the contrast about ten points.

In my camera bag

I now carry a Nikon D5200 and have the D3100 as my backup, a Nikon 18-70 3.5 - 4.5 (my favorite lens), an older Nikon Nikkor 135mm 3.5 and a generic 28-80mm 3.5-4.5 macro

Feedback

Get there early enough to have everything set up, bring a snack and a drink and be patient the shot will come if you allow it to.
