Location
This was taken at a local park, about two blocks from my house. I'm a self taught amateur photographer with a lot of my photos being taken during my morning walk with my dog. Luckily, I have a patient dog.Time
One of favourite times of the day is the west coast early winter morning. There's almost always some fog kicking around and I love the moodiness it gives a photo.Lighting
I knew I was shooting into the sun, but I didn't know how dark my foreground would be. I think it's too dark, but I still like the way it turned into a bit of a silhouette of a tree. It gives it a dark, grounding boldness in a very light ethereal atmosphere.Equipment
This was shot on my Canon 5D Mkii with the 50mm 1,8 (nifty fifty), handheld.Inspiration
The rays of sun appear and disappear so quickly, that this was a momentary display of sunbeams that I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. It really was very beautiful for about 10 minutes.Editing
I do some refinements in Lightroom. Mostly to bring out the shadow or increase the pop of the photo. I always want it to look as I remember it and I make a lot of small adjustments until what I see matches the photo in my minds eye.In my camera bag
I keep the 5D at home now, favouring the light and compact mirrorless Olympus OM-D EM-5 Mkii with the 12-40mm Pro lens. I plan on taking a similar photo as this with my Olympus now the cooler weather is coming, except this time I will use the HDR setting hoping to capture more depth.Feedback
I think if I were to try and do this again, I might be using a HDR multiple exposure setting. The dynamic range is large when you are in a dark forest and the sun is brightly shining through the fog.
