Behind The Lens

Location

I was excited to try out my new lens, the 85mm, it has such a gorgeous aperture so I headed out into the garden to get some photos of my cats who always enjoy watching my desperate attempts to photograph them as they refuse to co-operate.

Time

Just after lunch, it was a really nice day :)

Lighting

I was lucky really in that the light at 2 pm was settling really nicely on her face and illuminating her hair.

Equipment

My brand new Canon 85mm lens and Canon 60D. I do love camera equipment but mostly I like to settle for just one lens and see where it takes me. The great thing about this is that you learn to challenge yourself to achieve your vision. Once I took my 50mm lens out and it was a day when I really needed a telephoto, literally everything happened in the distance so I had to capture those memories with my mind. But usually it pays off and challenges oneself as a photographer.

Inspiration

It was really a spur of the moment photo as most of mine are. I glanced over and saw my sister sat by the lounge window studying and surrounded by school books. She looked so contemplative and thoughtful so I crept up to the window and took a few photos with my new lens. She didn't notice for a few moments which is why it's quite a candid photo.

Editing

I don't usually convert to black and white but this photo felt like it needed to be seen in monochrome, black and white photography gives a really timeless feel and I hope I've achieved that here.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon60D and have recently bought a back up camera, the 70D, two cameras that I absolutely adore. I love using the 50mm and 18-135mm lens, it has such a fantastic scope and is a very versatile lens.

Feedback

Always be spontaneous. It's great fun to plan in advance for weeks or even months to achieve the perfect shot but always be ready to capture the unknown. Of course that means always having your camera with you (which is a lot easier than it sounds) Just be aware that the world always likes to test photographers, sending out the best photo opportunities at the worst time (like when I was trying to photograph a stunning sea scape while escaping a giant swarm of wasps) Be ready and you won't regret it.
