Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a public children's park, it wasn't anything fancy. I just knew the location as i used to go there as a child especially since my parents used to own a restaurant very close by. Shooting shallow makes shooting a lot easier too, where i live there isn't much interesting places to shoot these kinds of looks, so a lot of my photos that i take always have a shallow depth of field.

Time

This was towards the afternoon, i vaguely remember the weather conditions, it was a pretty sunny day with only i hit of overcast. i believe it was around 5pm and the sun was setting around 6pm. it was pretty crazy with the small amount of time i had, thankfully the model was really easy going so it was easy to build a good rapport with her.

Lighting

Since the location wasn't interesting i had to shoot shallow i knew i wanted to shoot as shallow as my lens could go, so i shot in the shade and with only a reflector for catch lights. it was difficult as the sun was setting and it was getting darker pretty rapidly we had to walk around often to get a decent looking rim light to separate her from the background.

Equipment

This particular image was shot with a 5D Mark III with the standard battery grip (for weight balance), with a 85mm F1.2L II at F1.2 (YES ITS VERY SHALLOW, but it can be done, MAXIMUM BOKEH! MAXIMUM ISOLATION!).

Inspiration

My makeup artist Claire had made these amazing flower crowns that she had just made, she suggested that we could use it for a shoot. Its pretty much what inspired us to shoot this look.

Editing

I almost always post-process my images, clean up blemishes and colour grade them, and there is really no other reason for me besides the idea of creating beautiful and awesome images of people which captivate the viewers interest.

In my camera bag

Believe it or not i only carry my 85mm F1.2L II a bunch of memory cards and spare batteries, its my favourite lens for portraits. However there are times i take my 24-70mm F2.8L II and my 70-200mm F2.8L II in my trusty pelican case as well as strobes, ect. but for this particular look just a small reflector and my 85mm.

Feedback

My advice to you is don't be afraid to try new things. if you have to walk 50 metres (164 feet) to find a good location than you're probably not looking hard enough. Think before you shoot, take a shot and have a look at what you can see. Look at where the light is hitting your subject (is there any awkward shadows? is the model squinting?), whats in the background (is there anything distracting? does the colour work with the overall look?), talk to your team and build a good rapport with them. Always, if you can have another person (i tend to have the makeup artist stay, since i can get them to help me hold a reflector or fix bits and bobs, and definitely use communication to move your model (no photographer should need to touch their models at all). Good luck and have fun shooting!
